A Surprise Addition to the Herd: Meet Archie!
There's never a dull moment on the ranch, and one particularly rainy Friday morning proved that in the best way possible. My husband was out doing his usual morning chores—feeding, checking water, the whole routine—even though it was absolutely pouring down rain. He's all business when it comes to chores, especially in bad weather, so when my phone rang and I saw it was him, my heart skipped a beat. Why on earth would he stop in the middle of all that to call me?
I answered, and all I heard was pure awe in his voice: "You're not gonna believe this. You're not gonna believe this... Cookie had a baby!" He was practically speechless with excitement. There, in the middle of the hay shelter, was a brand-new calf lying next to Cookie. We named him Archie, and he's the cutest little thing—fuzzy brown and white, big curious eyes, and those wobbly newborn legs that make you smile no matter what. Cookie was calmly taking care of business, eating the afterbirth and keeping a close eye on her surprise baby.
The real kicker? We had no clue she was even pregnant. The suspected father is our bull Ringo, who we had castrated back in June. We figured that chapter was closed—but apparently Ringo got the job done just before officially becoming a steer. Archie was a total shock, but the very best kind. Healthy, strong, and already full of personality. That phone call in the rain turned a soggy morning into one we'll never forget. These are the moments that make ranch life so special—the unexpected joys that nature throws your way when you least expect them. Welcome to the family, little Archie. You've got us all wrapped around your tiny hoof.
